NTPC Limited engages in the generation and sale of bulk power to State Power Utilities. The company also provides consultancy, project management and supervision, energy trading, oil and gas exploration and coal mining. The company engages in the energy trading, oil and gas exploration, and coal mining activities. As of March 31, 2020, it had an installed power generation capacity of 62,110 megawatt.

Various projects of the company having aggregate capacity of 21,333 megawatt (including 9,354 megawatt being undertaken by Joint Venture and subsidiary companies) are under implementation in India and abroad. Total Capacity under Construction comprises 16,430 megawatt of Coal (Including 7,560 megawatt being undertaken by Joint Venture and subsidiary companies), 2,555 megawatt of Hydro (including 1,744 megawatt being undertaken by Joint Venture and subsidiary companies) and 2,348 MW of Renewable projects (Including 50 megawatt being undertaken by joint venture and subsidiary companies). During 2019-20, the company received 174.84 Million Metric Tonnes of coal as against 176.80 Million Metric Tonnes in 2018-19.
