Singapore Telecommunications Limited engages in the operation and provision of telecommunication systems and services, as well as investment holding.
Under a license granted by the Info-communications Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), the company had the exclusive rights to provide fixed national and international telecommunications services and public cellular mobile telephone services.
In addition, the company is licensed to offer Internet services and has also obtained frequency spectrum and license rights from IDA to install, operate and maintain 3G mobile communication systems and services respectively, as well as wireless broadband systems and services. The company also holds licenses from the Media Development Authority of Singapore for the purpose of providing subscription nationwide television services.
Segments
The company conducts its operations through four segments, including Wireline, Wireless, Information technology and Engineering, an Others.
Wireline: This segment provides cable-based and satellite-based Fixed Telecommunications Network Services (FTNS), such as domestic and ID services, leased lines, data communications, lease of satellite capacity, Inmarsat and Internet services.
Wireless: This segment provides mobile telecommunications services, such as cellular and paging services and sale of handsets and pagers.
Information technology and engineering: This segment provides information technology consultancy, systems integration and engineering services.
Others: This segment consists of storage of cables and investment activities.
Significant Events
On October 01, 2009, The company's wholly-owned subsidiary, Singapore Telecom International Pte Ltd., has incorporated a wholly-owned subsidiary in Singapore known as Cyan Private Limited ('Cyan'). Cyan is an investment holding company.
On December 1, 2009, Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. and KVH Co., Ltd. announced that they have signed an agreement to jointly develop and operate an ultra low latency and fully redundant network service between Singapore and Japan for the financial trading community.
