Operations

The company's activities include the operation of the Portland Aluminium Smelter, which sources alumina and produces aluminium ingots in Australia; the operation of coal mining and the sale of coal in Australia; the export of various commodity products, such as alumina, aluminium ingots, iron ore and steel, and the import of other commodities and manufactured goods, such as vehicle and industrial batteries, tyres, alloy wheels, and various metals, such as steel and aluminium extrusion products in Australia; and the operation of manganese mining and the sale of refined manganese products in the People’s Republic of China (the PRC).

The company's activities also include the exploration, development, production, and sale of naphtha and high sulphur fuel oil produced from the Seram Island Non-Bula Block, Indonesia; the exploration of oil in the Hainan-Yuedong Block in the Bohai Bay Basin in Liaoning Province, the PRC (the Hainan-Yuedong Block); the exploration, development, production and sale of oil from the Karazhanbas Oil and Gas Field in Mangistau Oblast, Kazakhstan (the Karazhanbas oilfield); and the exploration of manganese mining in Gabon, Western Africa.

Acquisitions

In August 2008, the company acquired a 60% equity interest Huazhou Mining Investment Limited, which holds 85% equity interest in Compagnie Industrielle et Commerciale des Mines de Huazhou (Gabon), which principally holds certain pre-operating exploration and mining rights in Gabon, Western Africa.
