Construction and Engineering

The Construction and Engineering Segments includes operations of Grinaker-LTA; Engineering & Projects Company; and McConnell Dowell Corporation Limited. Grinaker-LTA offers building, civil engineering, concessions, earthworks engineering, mechanical and electrical, mining, and property development services. McConnell Dowell offers building; civil engineering; fabrication; electrical maintenance; marine; mechanical; pipelines; and tunnelling and underground services. Engineering & Projects Company engages in minerals processing and industrial; sulphuric acid and gas handling; chemical and petrochemical environmental services; and power and energy metallurgical operations.

Opencast Mining

The Opencast Mining Segment includes operations of Moolmans, which conducts opencast mining operations in southern and West Africa.

Manufacturing and Processing

The Manufacturing and Processing Segment includes operations of Trident Steel and Aveng Manufacturing. Aveng Manufacturing offers beneficiation of steel reinforcing bars and mesh for concrete structures; concrete products for the infrastructure, landscaping, and railway markets; steel and concrete products primarily for the mining and geotechnical industries; and rail construction and maintenance services. Trident Steel offers steel merchanting, service centers, trident sterling tube, trident specialty, and steel.

Geographic Segments

The company's geographic segments include Republic of South Africa; rest of Africa and Mauritius; Australasia and Pacific Islands; Asia; and the Middle East and other.

Acquisitions

In July 2008, the company acquired entire issued share capital of Keyplan (Pty) Limited, a company which provides engineering services in the water management market in southern Africa. In July 2008, it also acquired 75% interest in Built Environs Holdings Pty Limited (Builts), a commercial construction and engineering company based in South Australia. It also acquired an additional 12.5% of the issued share capital of Builts in July 2009.

Dispositions

In June 2009, the company sold its 50% interest in Megchem Holdings Limited.
